Virginia “Ginger” Campbell, MD:
Physician, Podcaster, and Author
Dr. Campbell’s background is an important element in her success as a science communicator. Prior to medical school she studied electrical and biomedical engineering. In 2011 she was chosen one of 40 Engineers Making a Difference as a part of 40th Anniversary celebration of the School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she was an assistant professor from 1985-1989.
After completing her medical training Dr. Campbell spent over 20 years as an emergency physician in rural Alabama. In 2014 she returned to UAB to do a fellowship in Palliative Medicine. She now practices Palliative Medicine at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Birmingham, AL, where she enjoys both patient care and teaching residents, fellows, and medical students.
In 2006 Dr. Campbell dove into the then new world of podcasting by launching two shows: Brain Science and Books and Ideas. Both feature interviews with scientists, but Books and Ideas includes more diverse guests including science fiction writers. With the launch of Graying Rainbows in 2018, Dr. Campbell took her interviewing skills to a much more personal level.
